How to download mods on steam for skyrim

Now that mods are flooding into Skyrim nexus, I'm wondering if there really is a way to mod a digital copy of Skyrim. I hear you need to find some folder for skyrim on your computer but I'm not sure where to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated because if I could mod Skyrim I would be able to mod my other Bethesda games on steam.
